      Your tax, state by state

41% of shareable central taxes goes to the 28 states. Here is how your share was divided in 2026-27.

How the states' share is divided

16th Finance Commission formula for 2026-31. Poorer states (bigger income distance), bigger area and more forest raise a state's share, so small hill and north-eastern states get far more per person.

          How we did the maths

          • Budget heads follow the Ministry of Finance's “Rupee goes to” chart for 2026-27. It counts the states' share as an outgoing, so the base is ₹68.74 lakh crore (₹53.47 lakh crore of Union spending plus ₹15.26 lakh crore passed to states). Seven heads use Budget Estimates: states' share, interest, defence (Ministry of Defence incl. pensions), centrally sponsored schemes, major subsidies (food, fertiliser, petroleum), civil pensions, and central sector schemes (₹17.72 lakh crore less major subsidies and ₹2.19 lakh crore defence capital outlay, as the chart's footnote says). The chart does not publish rupee amounts for “Finance Commission & other transfers” or “Other expenditure”, so they split the remainder equally, matching their 7 paise each. Every tab shows the same amount for the same item.
          • Ministries and Big schemes use each item's Budget Estimate divided by the same base. Schemes are a selection, so they do not add up to your total.
          • States split the states' share of your tax (22.2%) by each state's official 2026-27 share (Receipt Budget, Annex 4). Per-person figures divide each state's amount by its Census 2011 population, the census the Finance Commission uses; Andhra Pradesh and Telangana use post-2014 boundaries. States also receive grants and scheme money not shown here.
          • Money is pooled, so no rupee is tagged to a project. This is your share of the plan. About 24 paise of every rupee the Centre spends is borrowed.
          • Budget Estimates made on 1 February 2026, not actual spending. Figures change after Budget 2027-28 on 1 February 2027. Central taxes only.
          • Food units use assumed prices: cutting chai ₹15, vada pav ₹20, biryani ₹250.
